How to calculate how much sod you need

Sod is sold by area, so the math is simply length × width plus a little waste. Measure the lawn in feet, multiply for square footage, add 5–10% for cuts, then divide into pallets or rolls.

  • Lawn area = length (ft) × width (ft)
  • With waste = area × (1 + waste%)
  • Pallets = area ÷ 450, rounded up
  • Rolls = area ÷ 10, rounded up

For irregular lawns, split the space into rectangles, figure each, and add them up. Curved beds and walkways are where most of the waste goes, so don't skip the allowance.

The sod mistake that leaves brown lines

Lay sod with the end seams all lined up and gaps between the strips, and within a week you'll see a grid of brown, dried-out lines. Lay it like brickwork instead — stagger the end seams row to row and butt every edge tight, with no gaps and no overlaps.

Wrong: lined-up seams with gaps dry into brown lines. Right: staggered, tightly butted strips knit into solid turf.

Order about 5 to 10% extra for the cuts around curves and edges, and lay it within 24 hours of delivery before it dries out.

Pro move: water it within the first hour of laying, then keep it damp for two weeks while the roots take hold.

How much does a pallet of sod cover?

UnitTypical coverage
Single roll / slab~10 sq ft
Small pallet~400 sq ft
Standard pallet~450 sq ft
Large pallet~500 sq ft

Pallet size differs by region and grass type, so confirm the coverage with your sod farm before ordering. The calculator uses 450 sq ft as a common middle figure.

How soon should you lay sod after delivery?

Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery — sooner in hot weather. It's a living product and starts to dry and yellow on the pallet fast. Have the ground graded and watered before it arrives so you can roll it out right away.

Sod calculator FAQ

How many rolls of sod in a pallet?
About 45 rolls if each covers 10 sq ft and the pallet holds 450 sq ft. Roll and slab sizes vary by farm, so the exact count can differ.
How much waste should I add?
5% for a simple rectangular lawn, up to 10% when there are lots of curves, beds and walkways to cut around. Extra pieces also patch any gaps.
Do I need to prep the soil first?
Yes — loosen and level the topsoil, remove old grass and debris, and water lightly before laying. Good soil contact is what lets sod root in.
